The Račić Mausoleum is a domed family tomb in Cavtat, on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and completed in 1922. Built for a wealthy local shipowning family, it is one of the most admired works of 20th century funerary architecture in the region and a quiet, striking stop above the Adriatic.

The story behind it

The Račić family made their fortune from shipping, and their name was well known in Cavtat. Then loss came quickly. Ivo Račić, the head of the family, died, and his children and his widow, Marija Račić, followed in the years that came after. Within a short time a prosperous family had all but vanished.

The mausoleum was commissioned as their final resting place and entrusted to Ivan Meštrović, one of the best-known Croatian sculptors of his generation. He completed it in 1922. Rather than a plain vault, he made a building that is as much sculpture as architecture, where stone, carving and setting work together to express mourning. Formally it is dedicated to Our Lady of Angels.

What to look for

• The mass of the building itself, which reads as a single carved monument rather than a conventional tomb with decoration added to it.
• The sculptural details on the exterior, where Meštrović's hand is visible in the figures and relief work.
• The dark cypress trees and the cemetery setting, which give the place a hushed, contemplative feel.
• The view from the hill toward the sea and the rooftops of Cavtat, a good reason to pause before you head back down.

• Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to walk around the mausoleum and take in the details and the view.
• Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the climb is more comfortable in summer.
• Access to the interior can be limited, so check current opening hours before you plan to go inside.
• Treat it as a place of remembrance: keep your voice low and dress respectfully, as the site is part of a working burial ground.
