Despre Millennium Child
Millennium Child is a stop on the Cross Lane South side of Dublin, in the old part of the city around Christ Church Cathedral and Wood Quay. It is worth a pause because the streets here sit on some of the oldest layers of Dublin, from its Viking beginnings to its medieval walled town.
The story behind it
The ground around here is best known for Wood Quay. In the 1970s archaeologists excavated the site and uncovered the remains of timber houses, workshops and everyday objects left by the Norse settlers who lived in Dublin about a thousand years ago. It became one of the most important Viking-age finds in Europe, and it set off a major public protest over whether the site should be built over. The Civic Offices now stand there.
Nearby, St Nicholas Within was the parish church of the medieval walled city, on Nicholas Street. The word "within" set it apart from St Nicholas Without, which lay outside the city wall. Only part of the old church story survives today, but the name is a handy reminder of where the line of the walls once ran.
What to look for
- Look at the Civic Offices and picture the Viking Dublin that lies beneath and around them, excavated in the 1970s.
- Look up at Christ Church Cathedral, which dominates the skyline of this part of the old city.
- Notice the street names and the narrow lanes, which hint at the layout of the medieval town.
- Look for the traces of St Nicholas Within on Nicholas Street, and note how the name marks the inside of the old city walls.
Tips for your visit
- Give it 15 to 30 minutes on its own, longer if you combine it with Christ Church and the Wood Quay area.
- Daylight is best for reading the architecture and the street details, and the area is quieter earlier in the day.
- Christ Church Cathedral is close by; check current opening hours if you want to go inside.
- The streets here are easy to cover on foot, so it fits well into a wider walk through medieval Dublin.
