Informazioni su Wilmington Historic District

The Wilmington Historic District is the old core of Wilmington, North Carolina, a neighborhood of brick streets, church steeples and antebellum houses set along the Cape Fear River. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and holds several hundred historic buildings, which makes it one of the best places in the state to see how a Southern port town grew.

The story behind it

Wilmington grew up as a river port, and the streets near the water were lined with warehouses where merchants stored goods before they were shipped on. Homes, churches and shops filled in around them, and many of those buildings survive. Some date from before the United States existed as a country.

Three houses show the span of that history. The Burgwin-Wright House is a colonial-era home from the 1770s. The Latimer House and the Bellamy Mansion are both grand residences built in the decades before the Civil War. Together they give a sense of how the town's wealthier families lived. Today people still live and work in the district, so it reads as a working neighborhood rather than a museum.

What to look for

  • Look at the brick commercial buildings near the river, which began life as warehouses and shops for merchants and still show their sturdy working-port design.
  • Pick out the church steeples that rise above the rooftops, and use them as landmarks as you wander between blocks.
  • Compare the Burgwin-Wright House, the Latimer House and the Bellamy Mansion, and notice how colonial and antebellum styles differ in proportion, windows and porches.
  • Notice how many buildings are still in everyday use as homes, shops and restaurants rather than preserved behind ropes.

Tips for your visit

  • Walking the streets is free, and the district is compact enough to cover on foot in a couple of hours if you like to stop and look closely.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light on the brick and fewer crowds, and in warm months bring water.
  • Several of the historic houses are open as museums. Check current opening hours and tour details before you plan to go inside.
  • The riverfront is right beside the district, so you can pair your walk with a stroll along the water and a stop at a nearby cafe.
