The route follows clues to sculptures tucked away on the town's streets, with stops such as The Five Things Found, The Accidental Tourist and the Old Mac Statue. Along the way you also pass heritage sites including the Moederkerk, Ou Kollege, the Rhenish Church, the Powder House, the Slave Houses and De Wet Square.
Is this a self-guided walking tour, and do I need to book a time?
Yes, it is self-guided and played on your phone. The app leads you from stop to stop, tells the story of each place and sets a riddle based on what is in front of you. There is no guide and no fixed slot, so you can start whenever suits you.
Where does it start and how long does it take?
The walk starts and finishes at the Stellenbosch University Museum, so you end up back where you began. It covers about 3.2 km and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours with the puzzles. You can pause at any point and continue later.
Is it suitable for children, and can we play as a group?
It suits families with older children who enjoy solving historical riddles and can manage close to three hours of walking. Younger children may find the length and the history-based puzzles hard going. One ticket covers your whole group, so you can play together rather than buying separately.
What if the weather turns cold, and can we play in the evening?
If it gets cold, you can pause and go inside to warm up at almost any location on the route, then carry on. Playing at night is not recommended, so plan to walk in daylight. No attraction tickets are needed for any of the stops.
