Informazioni su Piazza della Memoria
Piazza della Memoria in Palermo is a memorial square dedicated to the magistrates killed by the Mafia. It stands on Via Giovan Battista Pagano and turns the story of Sicily's fight against organised crime into something you can walk through, step by step.
The story behind it
The square is closely tied to Giovanni Falcone, the Italian judge and prosecutor who became the face of the legal battle against Cosa Nostra. He played a central role in the Maxi Trial, which ended with a verdict on 16 December 1987. The court handed down 19 life sentences, including to senior bosses such as Salvatore "Toto" Riina, and sentences totalling 2,665 years. The trial is remembered as a turning point because the Mafia was prosecuted as a single criminal organisation, not as a scattering of individual criminals.
Falcone was killed by the Mafia on 23 May 1992, in an attack ordered by Riina. His wife and three police officers of his escort died with him. The square honours him and the other magistrates who paid with their lives, and its design carries a simple message: justice will outlast the Mafia.
What to look for
- The steps bear the names of magistrates killed by the Mafia, so reading them as you climb is part of the experience.
- The columns are marked with "wounds", scars that stand for the violence the memorial remembers.
- The columns lead to a statue of Nike, the goddess of victory, a deliberate symbol of triumph.
- Nike faces the inscription "Giustizia" (Justice), which sums up the whole composition in one word.
Tips for your visit
- Give it 15 to 20 minutes. The names and the layout reward a slow, quiet look rather than a quick photo.
- It is an open square in the city, so you can see it from outside without a ticket.
- Treat it as a place of remembrance: keep voices low and avoid posing in ways that would feel out of place.
- Pair it with other stops on Palermo's Mafia history. Morning light makes the inscriptions easier to read and the streets are calmer.
See it on a quest
Palermo Undercover: Mafia Secrets brings you to Piazza della Memoria on foot as one stop of a longer route through the city. The app tells you about the place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the steps, columns and inscription instead of walking past. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
