Informazioni su Tenement Museum
The Tenement Museum at 103 Orchard Street in New York City tells the story of the immigrant families who lived in the Lower East Side's crowded apartment buildings. It is set in and around a real 19th-century tenement, so you see how ordinary people lived rather than reading about it in the abstract. It matters because this neighborhood shaped the city and the way America came to think about housing and reform.
The story behind it
In the 19th century, New York became a magnet for newcomers from around the world, and the Lower East Side was one of the main places they settled. Tenements were built close together and packed with residents, and many interior rooms received almost no light, air or ventilation. Overcrowding and poverty followed. By 1900, about 2.3 million New Yorkers lived in tenement housing, and the Lower East Side became one of the most densely populated neighborhoods anywhere.
Public attention turned to these buildings after Jacob Riis published How the Other Half Lives, which drew on his photographs of slum life and shocked many readers. The outcry helped push the city toward reform, and in 1901 New York passed the Tenement House Law. It required better sanitation, fire escapes and access to light in new buildings. The museum, founded in 1988, preserves this history inside an actual tenement building on Orchard Street.
What to look for
- The plain brick front of the old tenement building, with its fire escape, shows how narrow and tall these homes were.
- The neighboring buildings on Orchard Street and nearby blocks show a similar pattern of cramped fronts, ground-floor shops and iron fire escapes.
- The ground-floor storefront level is a reminder that these streets were places of work and trade as well as homes.
- The tight spacing of the buildings gives a sense of why interior rooms got so little daylight and air.
Tips for your visit
- Entry to the historic apartments is by guided tour, so check current opening hours and tour availability before you go, and book ahead if you can.
- Allow about an hour for a tour, plus extra time to walk the surrounding streets.
- Weekday mornings are usually calmer on the streets around Orchard Street than weekend afternoons.
- The area is full of places to stop for food and a look around, so it works well as part of a longer walk through the Lower East Side.
