Informazioni su St.L.Roth High School
St. L. Roth High School stands on Piața George Enescu in Mediaș, a Transylvanian Saxon town in central Romania. It is a working school named after Stephan Ludwig Roth, the educator and pastor born in Mediaș, and its striking facade has made it a talking point on walks through the town.
The story behind it
Stephan Ludwig Roth (1796 to 1849) is one of the best-known figures of the Transylvanian Saxon community. He was a teacher and pastor who pushed for school reform and was executed in Cluj in 1849 after the turmoil of the 1848 revolution. Naming a school in his birthplace after him ties the building to a long tradition of German-language education in Mediaș.
The building also has a more playful reputation. The creators of the Questo route read its decoration through the lens of Freemasonry and compare it to the Temple of Solomon, which Masonic tradition treats as a model for ritual. That is an interpretation rather than a documented history, and the quest invites you to weigh the clues yourself. We have left out the specific claims about symbols and rooftop details, because we could not confirm them.
What to look for
- Study the facade as a whole and ask yourself whether its ornament reads as ordinary school decoration or as a deliberate set of symbols.
- Count the entrances at the front. The quest's creators see three, which they compare to the doorways of a temple.
- Look up at the roofline, where the creators point to details that they link to Masonic imagery.
- Notice how the building sits on its square, and how it compares with the older churches and townhouses nearby.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes to look at the exterior and take photographs.
- This is an active school, so expect to enjoy it from outside. Do not count on going in, and respect lessons and pupils.
- Daylight shows the facade best, and morning or late afternoon light brings out its detail.
- The old town of Mediaș, with its fortified church, is a short walk away, so combine the school with the rest of the centre.
See it on a quest
Medias - Mysteries from the Fortress of Light - is it a masonic temple? brings you to St. L. Roth High School on foot as one stop of a longer route through Mediaș. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the facade properly instead of walking past. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
