Informazioni su Tailors' Bastion
The Tailors' Bastion (Bastionul Croitorilor) is a stout stone bastion on Strada Baba Novac in Cluj-Napoca, and the best preserved piece of the city's medieval fortifications. It was kept up by the tailors' guild, rebuilt more than once after damage, and is linked to the grim fate of the general Baba Novac in 1601.
The story behind it
The bastion is first mentioned in 1475, in the days when Cluj was ringed by guild-run defences. Each section of the walls was assigned to a craft guild, which paid for its upkeep and had to man it in time of danger. This one belonged to the tailors, hence the name. It stood on the most exposed stretch of the circuit, so it was built heavy and thick.
Its fortunes were rough. Lightning struck in 1627 and set off the gunpowder stored inside, wrecking the tower. The city paid for its rebuilding in 1629 under Prince Gabriel Bethlen, and for a time it was even called the Bethlen Bastion. The Austrians reworked it again between 1709 and 1711. Its darkest chapter came in early 1601, when Baba Novac, a general serving Michael the Brave, was captured and executed by Transylvanian nobles. His body was impaled and displayed by the bastion as a warning. A bronze statue of him by Virgil Fulicea now stands in front of it, put up in 1975.
What to look for
- Find the Latin inscription high on the eastern wall, near the roofline, which records the gunpowder explosion and the rebuilding of 1629.
- Look at the cut stone of the walls and the firing positions, which show how the bastion was meant to be defended.
- Follow the stretch of crenellated wall running north and the wall-walk along its top.
- Stop at the bronze statue of Baba Novac and notice how it faces the bastion where his story ended.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to walk around the outside, read the inscription and see the statue.
- The bastion is best appreciated from the street, so check current access before planning on going inside.
- Morning or late afternoon light shows up the stonework and the inscription better than harsh midday sun.
- It sits a short walk from the old town centre, so it combines easily with a wider stroll through medieval Cluj.
