The story behind it

The original was the Bodor Well, made by Péter Bodor, a master craftsman from Szeklerland, in the early 1820s on the main square of Marosvásárhely, today Târgu Mureș in Romania. It was admired for its elaborate structure, with a dome that housed a clock and a musical mechanism driven by water.

The original did not last. It was wrecked in 1838 and never repaired, slowly decayed, and was finally taken down in 1911. The Budapest version, built a generation later in 1935-36, keeps the idea alive, so you can see and hear something close to what the people of Marosvásárhely once enjoyed.
