Born Cultural Centre occupies the historic Mercat del Born, an elegant 1876 iron-and-glass market designed by Josep Fontseré. The market served the neighborhood for nearly a century before closing in the 1970s. During a 2001 renovation intended to transform the market into a library, workers made an extraordinary discovery: the ruins of the La Ribera neighborhood destroyed during the War of Spanish Succession in 1714. When Philip V's forces conquered Barcelona, they demolished the La Ribera district to make way for a military citadel, erasing an entire neighborhood in a brutal assertion of power. The excavation revealed an incredible 8,000 square meters of archaeological material from over 60 dwellings, along with streets, wells, and sewers, creating a complete picture of daily life in an 18th-century urban neighborhood. Instead of building a library, the decision was made to preserve this archaeological treasure in situ. The Born Cultural Centre opened in 2013, with much of it remaining free to visit, allowing you to descend into history and see how ordinary people lived in medieval and early modern Barcelona.
