Despre Government House
Government House at 48 King St is a historic public building beside the old plaza in St. Augustine, Florida, a site tied to the governing of the town under Spanish, British and American rule. It matters because few buildings in the oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the continental United States show so clearly how authority changed hands over the centuries.
The story behind it
The corner of King Street and the plaza has been the seat of government in St. Augustine since the Spanish colonial era. A governor's residence stood here from the late 1500s, and the building that followed it was rebuilt and remodelled many times as the town passed from Spain to Britain, back to Spain, and finally to the United States. Governors of each flag worked and lived on or near this spot.
In 1833 and 1834 the building was reworked as a courthouse to designs by Robert Mills, the architect who later designed the Washington Monument. In the mid-1930s it was rebuilt again, this time as a post office and customs house. Today it serves as a museum and public building, so the walls have seen government, justice and mail all under one roof.
What to look for
- Notice how the building faces the open space of the Plaza de la Constitution, the old civic heart of the town, and imagine the plaza as the place where proclamations were made.
- Look at the formal, orderly lines of the facade, which reflect the 19th-century remodelling rather than the colonial original.
- Look for the coquina stone that is typical of old St. Augustine, a local limestone made of compacted shells, and compare it with the other buildings nearby.
- Step back and take in how close you are to the Cathedral Basilica, which shows how church and government stood side by side in a Spanish colonial town.
Tips for your visit
- Plan 20 to 30 minutes for the building and its surroundings, longer if you go inside and read the displays.
- Check current opening hours and whether the interior is open before you go.
- Morning is the quietest time on the plaza, and the soft evening light is good for photographs of the stonework.
- It sits within easy walking distance of St. George Street, the Cathedral Basilica and the waterfront, so it fits naturally into a wider walk of the historic centre.
