Despre Villa Angiolina
Villa Angiolina is a mid-19th-century villa in the centre of Opatija, Croatia, set in a seafront park. Built in 1844, it is widely seen as the start of Opatija's story as a seaside resort, and today it houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism.
The story behind it
The villa was built in 1844 by Iginio Scarpa, a wealthy merchant, and he named it after his wife Angiolina, who had died before it was finished. She never lived in the house that carries her name. Scarpa surrounded it with a garden of exotic plants gathered from many parts of the world, and the collection drew curious visitors from well beyond this stretch of the Adriatic coast.
Those guests helped turn a quiet fishing area into a fashionable retreat with a mild climate. That is why the villa now holds the Croatian Museum of Tourism, which follows the town's change from small coastal settlement to seaside destination. The park laid out alongside the villa is still one of the most pleasant places to start a walk through Opatija.
What to look for
- The villa itself, a stately 19th-century residence that is far more modest than the grand hotels that later lined the shore.
- The mix of trees and shrubs in Angiolina Park, a reminder of Scarpa's passion for collecting plants from around the world.
- The palm trees along the paths, which give the park its Mediterranean feel and are especially striking against the sea light.
- The sense of the sea close at hand, since the park opens towards the waterfront and the promenade beyond.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for the park and the villa's exterior, and more if you plan to visit the museum. Check current opening hours before you go.
- Morning and late afternoon are the calmest times, with softer light for the garden and fewer people on the paths.
- The park is a good base for exploring on foot: the seafront promenade and the Maiden with the Seagull sculpture are a short stroll away.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as you will likely want to keep walking along the coast afterwards.
See it on a quest
Opatija: The Last Queen Before Rome brings you to Villa Angiolina on foot as one stop of a longer route through the town's coastal streets. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so the villa and its park become something to look at closely rather than just photograph. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no fixed departure time.
