Despre Old Ursuline Convent Museum

The Old Ursuline Convent Museum at 1100 Chartres Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans is the oldest surviving building in the Mississippi River Valley, completed in 1752. It was the home of the Ursuline nuns, who ran a hospital, a school and an orphanage for the young colony, and it is tied to the legend of the Casket Girls and their supposed vampires.

The story behind it

The Ursulines reached New Orleans in 1727, a small group of nuns sent to run a hospital in a settlement of only a few hundred people. They went on to open a school, take in orphans and teach girls, and the order became a backbone of social care in the colony. The building you see today was completed in 1752 and has outlasted the great fires that swept through the city later in the century.

The legend comes from the filles à la cassette, young French women sent to Louisiana as prospective wives, the first of them arriving in 1728. They carried their belongings in small trunks called cassettes, and over time the word slid toward "casket". Storytellers took it from there: the trunks held vampires, the nuns stored them on the upper floor, and the shutters were sealed with blessed nails. Historians firmly reject the tale, but it remains a cornerstone of New Orleans vampire lore, and the convent is where every version of it begins.

What to look for

  • The sturdy, symmetrical facade is plain and restrained, very different from the iron lace balconies found elsewhere in the Quarter.
  • Look up at the shutters on the top floor, the ones the legend says were nailed shut against whatever lies behind them.
  • Next door stands St. Mary's Church, part of the same complex, whose later date shows how long the site has served the city.
  • Notice how quiet this stretch of Chartres Street feels compared with the busier blocks near Jackson Square.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you plan to go inside the museum, or about 10 minutes for the exterior alone. Check current opening hours and tour arrangements before you go.
  • Morning is usually calmer on Chartres Street, and the facade photographs well in softer light.
  • The Beauregard-Keyes House is just across the street, so the two make an easy pairing.
  • The convent sits in the lower French Quarter, a short walk from Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral, so it fits neatly into a longer stroll.

See it on a quest

New Orleans French Quarter: The Lost Treasure is a treasure-hunt style walk through the Quarter. You reach the convent on foot as one stop of a longer route, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of the building. One ticket covers the whole group.

Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in New Orleans suits readers who prefer a darker mood. You walk between real places, hear the story of each one when you get there, and work out a puzzle on the spot. One ticket covers the whole group.

The Haunting File: New Orleans, The French Quarter After Dark fits the convent's vampire legend well. You arrive on foot, the app tells you what stands in front of you, and you solve a puzzle there before moving on. One ticket covers the whole group.
