Despre Grey Towers
Grey Towers in Milford, Pennsylvania, is a castle-like stone mansion that was the family home of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the US Forest Service and a two-term governor of Pennsylvania. It is now a National Historic Landmark and a place where the story of American conservation can be seen in the house and in the grounds around it.
The story behind it
The house was built in 1886 for James Pinchot, Gifford's father, and designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt. Its French chateau style, local stone and pointed turrets made it look more like a country estate in Europe than a summer house above the Delaware River.
Gifford Pinchot grew up here and later made the house a gathering place for foresters, politicians and thinkers who were shaping how the United States managed its forests. In 1963 the Pinchot family gave the property to the US Forest Service, and President John F. Kennedy took part in the dedication that year. Today the Forest Service looks after it, and it remains linked to conservation education and discussion.
What to look for
- The rough stone walls and round towers of the main house, which give it the look of a small chateau on a Pennsylvania hillside.
- The terraces and gardens around the house, where the design draws the eye toward the landscape beyond.
- The outdoor spaces used by the family for dining and conversation, which show how much of the estate was meant to be lived in outdoors.
- The views over the town of Milford and the wooded hills, a reminder of why forests mattered so much to the family.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour or two if you want to see the grounds properly, longer if you join a house tour.
- Check current opening hours and tour availability before you go, as the house and grounds can follow different schedules through the year.
- Late spring to early autumn is the most pleasant time for the gardens and the views, and morning light flatters the stonework.
- Milford's small town centre is close by, so it is easy to combine Grey Towers with a walk, a coffee and a look at the historic streets.
