Despre The Katyń Memorial
The Katyń Memorial is a bronze monument on the Hudson River waterfront at Exchange Place in Jersey City, New Jersey. It honors the Polish officers and citizens killed by the Soviet secret police in 1940, and it looks straight across the water to Lower Manhattan. It is a short, quiet stop, and it is worth knowing the story before you stand in front of it.
The story behind it
In the spring of 1940, Soviet NKVD forces executed thousands of Polish prisoners of war and civilians, among them army officers, police and members of the intelligentsia. The best-known killing site was the Katyń forest in western Russia, which gave the massacre its name. The number of victims is usually put at around 22,000. For decades the Soviet Union blamed Nazi Germany, and it only acknowledged responsibility in 1990.
The Jersey City memorial was created by the Polish-born sculptor Andrzej Pitynski and dedicated in 1991, soon after that admission. It was placed here in part because the New Jersey area has a large Polish American community, for whom remembering Katyń had long been a matter of principle. The figure at its center is a Polish soldier, bound and pierced by a bayonet.
What to look for
- The bronze soldier itself, whose bound hands and bayonet wound turn a historical fact into a single, stark image.
- The inscriptions on and around the base, which name the massacre and the year, so take a moment to read them.
- The placement of the monument against the water, with the towers of Lower Manhattan behind it as you face the river.
- The contrast between the memorial and the glass office buildings of Exchange Place around it, a reminder of how much history sits beside the modern waterfront.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes at the memorial, longer if you want to read the inscriptions and take in the view.
- It stands in an open public space outdoors, so you do not go inside anything. Check current conditions if the weather looks poor.
- Morning and late afternoon give the softest light on the bronze and the skyline, and the waterfront is usually calmer outside the commuter rush.
- Exchange Place is a PATH train stop, and the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs right past, so you can combine the memorial with an easy stroll along the river.
