Despre Wharfage Car Park
Wharfage Car Park in Ironbridge, Telford, marks the western end of the Ironbridge Wharfage, the long riverside retaining wall and roadway built in the 1780s beside the River Severn. It is an everyday place to park, but it is also a good starting point for understanding how the Ironbridge Gorge worked as a river port.
The story behind it
After the Iron Bridge was completed in 1779, the Wharfage was built in the following decade to give the busy river trade more room to load and unload boats. The wall and roadway you see today are almost 250 years old. The creators describe it as a feat of construction in its own right, though it is often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbour, the bridge.
Warehouses were part of the same story. The Severn was not always navigable, because before weirs managed the river, its level rose and fell with the seasons and could be too low for boats in summer. Goods were then kept in warehouses until the water allowed them to travel downstream. One warehouse along the Wharfage, once known as the Severn Warehouse, is built in an unusual Gothic Revival style, with a church-like apse on the river side known as the Lady Chapel. Its original steep roof was replaced with a flat one after rainwater kept leaking in.
What to look for
- Look at the long retaining wall along the river edge and notice how it creates a level working platform above the Severn.
- Find the Severn Warehouse and its Gothic Revival styling, which is very unusual for a building made to store goods.
- Spot the church-like apse on the river side of the warehouse, known as the Lady Chapel, and its flat roof.
- Note the two towers that flank the Lady Chapel and imagine how steeper roofs and chimneys would have changed the skyline.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to walk along the Wharfage and read the details of the wall and warehouse, more if you pair it with the Iron Bridge.
- Check current parking arrangements and charges before you rely on the car park, as these can change.
- Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light on the river and fewer people on the roadway.
- The Iron Bridge and the town centre are close by on foot, so the car park makes a handy base for a longer wander.
See it on a quest
The Historic Ironbridge quest takes you to the Wharfage on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, then sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so the wall and its story become something to work out rather than just walk past. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like with no guide.
