Despre St John's College

St John's College is one of the largest and best known colleges of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. Its Tudor gatehouse, grand courts, Victorian chapel and the covered Bridge of Sighs over the River Cam make it one of the most photographed places in Cambridge.

The story behind it

Lady Margaret Beaufort was a powerful figure of the early Tudor court, and she set up the college to educate scholars and clergy. Her coat of arms and heraldic beasts still decorate the Great Gate, so the founder is visible from the moment you reach the street. Over the centuries the college grew across the river, and the Bridge of Sighs, built in the 1830s, now links its older courts with the newer buildings on the far bank.

The college also appears in a modern spy story. Novelist Jennie Rooney, who studied history at Cambridge, wrote Red Joan, later made into a film. It was inspired by Melita Norwood, a British civil servant who passed classified information to the KGB for about four decades. Her story became public only in 1999, when she was 87. In the novel, the heroine meets her future comrades as a student in Cambridge, which gives the college's quiet courts a slightly conspiratorial air.

What to look for

  • The Great Gate is decorated with the founder's heraldry, so look up at the carved coat of arms and the animals beside it.
  • The Bridge of Sighs is a covered stone bridge over the Cam, named after its Venetian namesake, and it looks best from the neighbouring bridges on the river.
  • The chapel, a Victorian Gothic building with a tall tower, stands out above the roofs of the courts and is easy to spot from across town.
  • The sequence of courts, from old brick Tudor to later stone, shows how the college expanded over several centuries.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you can enter the grounds, and longer if you want to walk along the river nearby.
  • Visitor access to colleges can change, especially during exams and events, so check current opening hours and entry rules before you go.
  • Early morning is usually the quietest time, and the river views are at their best in soft light.
  • Trinity College, Magdalene College and the riverside paths are all close, so St John's fits easily into a longer walk.

See it on a quest

The quest Highlights of Cambridge: Scholars & Secret Societies passes St John's College as one stop on a longer walking route through the city. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
