Back in the 18th Century, a learned gentleman visited and declared that all there was in Lichfield was Pubs, Parsons and People. I would like to take you around and show you that there is much more to Lichfield than just those 3 Ps. There are PILGRIMAGE, PUNISHMENT, PARKS, POOLS, PLANES, POLITICIANS and much more.

Visitors in Lichfield for the Cathedral or Samuel Johnson, and locals who think they know the city, will get the darker and funnier stories behind its streets: pilgrimage, punishment, old inns and the Guildhall prison cells. Couples and groups of friends can cover the 1.9 km route in about 75 minutes. Families with young children may want something else, since the tales of prostitutes and punishment are pitched at adults.

Where does the Lichfield history walk start and finish?
The walk is a loop. It starts at St Mary's Church and finishes at Boots Corner. Along the way it passes Stowe Pool, the Cathedral Close and Bishop's Palace, Dr Darwin's House, the King's Head and the George Inn, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and the Guildhall and Prison Cells.
How long does the walk take and how far is it?
Most players take about 75 minutes, including the walking and the puzzles at each stop. The route covers around 1.9 km through central Lichfield, from the church and the pools to the Cathedral, the old inns and the Guildhall.
Is it suitable for children?
The stories cover pubs, parsons, prostitutes and punishment, including the Guildhall prison cells, so the walk is aimed mainly at adults, couples and groups of friends. Older children with an interest in history may enjoy it, but it is not designed with young families in mind.
Do we need to book a time or pay to play as a group?
No booking is needed and the quest is free to play, so a group of friends can each follow along on their phones. Start whenever suits you; there is no guide and no group to meet.
Can we stop for a drink and carry on later?
Yes. You can pause the quest at any point and continue later, which is handy on a route that passes the King's Head and the George Inn. The app picks up where you left off.
