Despre IGLESIA DE SANTO DOMINGO GUZMÁN
The Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán is a parish church in the old hilltop village of Benalmádena Pueblo, in Benalmádena on Spain's Costa del Sol. It is dedicated to Saint Dominic de Guzmán, founder of the Dominican order, and stands on Calle Santo Domingo among whitewashed lanes that feel a world away from the beach resort below.
The story behind it
To understand the church, start with the village around it. Benalmádena Pueblo sits high on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, part of the Cordillera Penibética, the mountain chain that runs parallel to the Costa del Sol. The height was a deliberate choice. For centuries Barbary pirates from North Africa raided this coastline, and a settlement above the sea was far easier to defend. It also gave people time to see danger coming and prepare, or to flee.
That position still gives the pueblo its big views. From its higher points you look across the Bay of Málaga to the east and towards the Rock of Gibraltar to the west. In very clear conditions the mountains of northern Morocco can be made out across the Strait of Gibraltar, which is only about 14 kilometres wide at its narrowest. In the second half of the twentieth century the coast below changed from a quiet fishing shore into one of Europe's busiest holiday areas, while the old village kept its small scale and its church at the centre of daily life.
What to look for
- The church itself, a working parish church set among the whitewashed houses of the village rather than apart from them.
- The name on the street and on the church, both pointing to Saint Dominic de Guzmán, a reminder of how closely religion and place names are tied in Andalusian towns.
- The views from the higher parts of the pueblo towards the Bay of Málaga and, on a clear day, the coast stretching west.
- The contrast between the quiet old village and the dense resort of Benalmádena Costa far below.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the church and its surroundings, longer if you want to wander the lanes or stop for a coffee.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer, the streets are cooler and the views are at their clearest.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the village streets slope and the pueblo sits well above the coast.
- Check current opening hours before hoping to go inside, and dress modestly, since it is an active place of worship.
See it on a quest
The church is one stop on Streets of Benalmádena: Discover the “Pueblo” with its famous Niña, a self-guided walk through the old village. You reach each place on foot, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you notice details you would otherwise walk past. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
