Informazioni su Worcester Common
Worcester Common is the historic town green at the centre of Worcester, Massachusetts, set aside in 1669 as shared public ground. Today it is a compact city park beside City Hall, but it still holds a colonial burying ground and a Civil War memorial, which makes it the best place to start understanding the city.
The story behind it
When the Common was set aside in 1669 it was far larger than it is now, covering about 20 acres. Over the centuries streets and buildings took bites out of it, and the green you walk across today measures roughly 4.4 acres.
It was never just open lawn. In 1719 the town built a meeting house here, used for town meetings and for Sunday worship. As in many New England towns, a burying ground followed, and the old graveyard with its weathered stones is still part of the Common. People now eat lunch and skate in winter a few steps from colonial graves. Later losses are remembered here too: the Soldiers' Monument honours Worcester men who died in the Civil War.
What to look for
- Weathered slate gravestones in the old burying ground, where you can still pick out worn lettering and carved designs if you walk slowly.
- The Soldiers' Monument, a Civil War memorial that shows how the town chose to honour its dead in the middle of its busiest civic space.
- The contrast between the paths, benches and city buildings around the edges and the old stones in the grass, which shows how the Common has been reshaped over three and a half centuries.
- The neighbouring City Hall, which faces the green and reminds you that this ground has always been the civic heart of Worcester.
Tips for your visit
- Give yourself 20 to 30 minutes to cross the green, read the stones and look at the monument without rushing.
- Morning and late afternoon light is soft on the old gravestones, and the park is quieter outside the lunch hour.
- The Common is an open public park, so you can walk through it freely. Check current opening hours for any nearby buildings you want to enter.
- City Hall and the shops and cafes along Main Street are a short walk away, so it is easy to combine with lunch or a wider stroll downtown.
