Informazioni su Constitution Monument
The Constitution Monument is a stone obelisk in the Plaza de la Constitución, in the historic centre of St. Augustine, Florida. It was raised in 1813 to commemorate the first Spanish Constitution. It stands in a plaza that has anchored the city since Spanish colonial times.
The story behind it
After Ponce de León claimed Florida for Spain, the crown sent Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to set up a stronghold, and he founded St. Augustine in 1565. The plaza was later laid out under Spanish royal ordinances, which governed how colonial towns were planned, including how a plaza was oriented to the compass points. The obelisk was added in 1813 to mark the Spanish Constitution.
Over the centuries the plaza became the place where the town's big moments played out. Spanish and American representatives met here in 1821 for the transfer of Florida to the United States, and Union naval forces took control of the city in 1862. The plaza was also once a place where enslaved people were sold. In the 1960s it became a gathering point for peaceful civil rights protests, part of a local movement in which Robert Hayling, a Black dentist, was a leading figure. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested in St. Augustine in 1964.
What to look for
- The obelisk itself, a simple monument that commemorates a constitution from the final years of Spanish rule in Florida.
- The historical markers and plaques around the plaza, which tell the story of its difficult chapters as well as its ceremonies.
- The shape of the plaza, an open rectangle opening toward the waterfront, a layout inherited from Spanish colonial planning.
- The surrounding buildings, including the cathedral and government buildings, which show how the plaza has remained the civic heart of the old town.
Tips for your visit
- The plaza is an open public space, so you can walk through it freely. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to read the markers and look around.
- Early morning or evening is the quietest time, with softer light and fewer crowds on nearby St. George Street.
- It sits right at the edge of the pedestrian old town, so shops, cafes and the bayfront are only a short stroll away.
- Wear comfortable shoes, since the best way to see the area is to keep walking the historic streets around the plaza.
