The Fortifications of Sibiu are the surviving stretches of medieval walls, towers and bastions that once ringed the old town of Sibiu in Transylvania, Romania. The story behind it

Before the Mongol invasion of 1241, Sibiu was a modest Saxon settlement, much of it built of wood and poorly protected. The invasion was a hard lesson. In the following centuries the townspeople replaced weak defences with walls of stone and brick, and added towers and bastions as the town grew. Guilds took responsibility for individual towers, which is why several still carry the names of crafts.

In the 15th century the threat came from the Ottomans, who pushed into Transylvania and tested Sibiu's defences more than once in the 1430s.
