Informazioni su The Savannah Cotton Exchange building
The Savannah Cotton Exchange is a late 19th-century commercial building near the riverfront in Savannah, Georgia, built when cotton was the engine of the city's economy. It matters because it stands for the trade that made Savannah rich, and for the people whose labor sat behind that wealth. Today it is a private Freemasons' lodge, so it is best enjoyed from the street.
The story behind it
Savannah grew into one of the major cotton ports of the American South, and the Cotton Exchange was where merchants and brokers gathered to buy, sell and set prices for bales that were shipped around the world. The trade had been built on enslaved labor, and cotton stayed at the center of the local economy after the Civil War and the end of slavery. The building, with its decorative terra cotta, became a proud symbol of the city's merchant class.
As the cotton trade declined in the twentieth century, the building lost its original purpose. It is now home to Solomon's Lodge No. 1, a Freemasons' lodge, and it is no longer open to the public. The lodge works to raise funds to look after the aging structure.
What to look for
- Look at the decorative terra cotta on the facade, a hallmark of the building's Victorian-era style.
- Notice how the building sits close to the river, a reminder that cotton bales moved from these streets straight onto ships.
- Walk to the nearby Factors Walk, where cobbled ramps and iron bridges once linked the merchants' offices to the waterfront.
- Step back across the street for a full view of the facade, then look up at the rooflines and upper windows, where the detail is easiest to appreciate.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 10 to 15 minutes for the building itself, longer if you combine it with Factors Walk and the riverfront.
- The interior is not open to visitors, so enjoy the exterior from the sidewalk.
- Morning light is gentler for photographs and the riverfront is calmer before the crowds arrive.
- River Street, with its shops and cafes, is close by, and the cobblestones are uneven, so wear comfortable shoes.
