Informazioni su The Post Office Headquarters
The Post Office Headquarters on Urdaneta Kalea in San Sebastián is a Belle Époque building that was first built for the School of Arts and Crafts and later became home to the city's Post and Telegraphs department. It stands beside the former engineering school that is now the Koldo Mitxelena Culture Center, and the two neighbours tell a neat story of how city buildings change purpose.
The story behind it
The building on the left was designed for the School of Arts and Crafts, in the decorative style of San Sebastián's Belle Époque years. When a new school was built, the Post and Telegraphs department moved in. A place made for teaching the arts ended up handling letters and telegrams.
Next door, the building on the right began in a plainer style as the Provincial Institute of Second Education. It later housed the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Navarra. In the early 1990s it was restored and reopened as the Koldo Mitxelena Culture Center. One building went from beauty to bureaucracy, the other from study to culture.
What to look for
- The ceramic frieze on the former School of Arts and Crafts building is the most glamorous detail, and it shows what the building was designed for.
- The decorative ornamentation around the facade reflects the Belle Époque taste of the city at the time.
- Compare the two facades side by side: the ornate one on the left against the more austere one on the right.
- Notice how the Koldo Mitxelena building, once a school, now reads as a public cultural space after its restoration.
Tips for your visit
- Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to look at both facades and take photos from across the street.
- Daylight shows the ceramic work and ornamentation best, so aim for morning or afternoon.
- The Koldo Mitxelena Culture Center is next door. Check current opening hours and its current programme if you want to go in.
- The street is in the city centre, so it fits easily into a walk that also takes in the Old Town and other central sights.
See it on a quest
Downtown San Sebastian: The Identity Mystery passes this spot as one stop on a longer walk through the centre. You reach the building on foot, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a good way to notice details like the frieze that most passers-by miss. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like.
