Informazioni su Oak Bridge
Oak Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in Central Park, New York City, carrying a path across Bank Rock Bay at the northern end of the Lake. Because of what it crosses it is also called Bank Rock Bridge, and it works as one of the main gateways into the Ramble, the wooded, winding part of the park. The bridge you cross today is the latest in a line that goes back to the park's first decade.
The story behind it
Calvert Vaux, one of the park's designers, drew the first Oak Bridge around 1859 and 1860 as a timber bridge set on stone abutments. It was meant to welcome walkers into the Ramble from the lakeside. Wood standing over water does not last, and the bridge was rebuilt more than once: in 1935, again in 1982, and again in 2009.
The most recent version follows Vaux's original design, so the view from the deck is close to what the first visitors saw. The stone footings at the ends are said to be the oldest part of the crossing, which makes the bridge a good example of a park landmark that has been renewed again and again rather than left alone.
What to look for
- Look out across Bank Rock Bay from the middle of the deck, where the water is calm and sheltered from the rest of the Lake.
- Notice how the paths on the far side disappear into the trees, which is exactly the effect the bridge was designed to create as a threshold to the Ramble.
- Check the stone supports at either end, which anchor the bridge to the shore and carry the oldest masonry on the site.
- Watch the edges of the bay for birds, as this quiet corner of the Lake is a favourite with birdwatchers.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes for the bridge itself, and more if you plan to wander into the Ramble or pause to watch the water.
- Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the light is softer and the paths are quieter.
- Bethesda Terrace and the Lake are close by, so the bridge fits easily into a longer walk through the middle of the park.
- It is an open outdoor crossing, so there is nothing to enter, but check current park conditions before you go, and bring a phone or map because the Ramble's paths are easy to get turned around in.
See it on a quest
