Informazioni su Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is a Benedictine abbey crowning a tidal island off the coast of Normandy, in the commune of Le Mont-Saint-Michel, France. Founded in the early 8th century and rebuilt over the following centuries, it is one of the great pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The story behind it
According to tradition, in 708 Aubert, bishop of Avranches, dreamed three times that the Archangel Michael ordered him to build a sanctuary on the rock, then known as Mont Tombe. Legend says he hesitated until signs convinced him, and he then had the first church built. Benedictine monks settled here in the 10th century, and the abbey grew into a vast complex of Romanesque and Gothic buildings stacked up the rock. Pilgrims came from across Europe, and many took home a scallop shell as a keepsake of the journey.
In the 12th century Abbot Robert of Torigni built up the abbey's library and pushed the building work forward. He was a chronicler as well as a builder. In the Hundred Years' War the Mont was besieged by English forces and never fell, and its captain, Louis d'Estouteville, is remembered for the defence. Across the Channel, St Michael's Mount in Cornwall is also a tidal island with a church of St Michael, and it shares the same name in English.
What to look for
- The golden statue of the Archangel Michael on top of the spire, which gleams against the sky and can be seen from far across the bay.
- The cloister, a calm arcaded space where the Benedictine monks walked and meditated, with a garden at its centre.
- The contrast between the Romanesque abbey church and the Gothic buildings of La Merveille on the north side of the rock.
- The view over the bay from the terraces, where the tide can change the whole landscape within hours.
Tips for your visit
- Allow at least two hours for the abbey itself, plus extra time to wander the lanes of the village below on the way up.
- Entering the abbey requires a ticket, and opening hours vary by season, so check current opening hours before you go.
- Early morning and late afternoon are usually quieter than midday, and the light on the bay is at its best then.
- Wear shoes with good grip. The climb along the Grande Rue and up the stairs is steep, with many steps and uneven stone.
