MARIBOR, 1532
The Ottoman army is camped across the river. The town has refused to open the gates twice.
Along the wall, someone has been cutting small marks into the stone. Four of them, four nights in a row, always where the wall is weakest. Whoever cut them knew exactly what he was looking at.
The watchman keeps a book of everyone who uses the small gate in the wall. On the night the charge went off, the book has two entries.
One of them is crossed out.
You have the book now. Walk the wall from the castle down to the river, find the four marks, and read what they spell together.
Maribor has told this story for five hundred years. It has never told this part.
Notes: The 1532 siege, the castle, the four surviving towers and the old vine are real. Mali cevljarcek is a Maribor legend. The gate book, the marks and the people in this story are invented.
