Informazioni su Muralla Urbana de Marbella
The Muralla Urbana de Marbella is the surviving stretch of the medieval walls and castle that once protected the old town of Marbella, on Spain's Costa del Sol. Of Moorish origin and traditionally dated to around the 10th century, the walls still run between the houses of the historic centre, close to Plaza Castillo. They are one of the oldest structures in the city.
The story behind it
Marbella's walls date from the period of Al-Andalus, when the town was fortified as part of a chain of defences along the southern coast. The fortress and the walled enclosure around the old medina were built to shelter the town's heart and to watch over the surrounding land and sea. The 10th century is the date usually given for their origins, which makes the oldest parts over a thousand years old.
The Moorish era ended in 1485, when the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella took Marbella. The castle then passed into Christian hands and was used as a military stronghold. Over the following centuries the town grew around and against its defences, and today only fragments of the castle and the wall remain, absorbed into the streets and buildings of the old quarter.
What to look for
- Look for stretches of thick masonry wall standing directly beside whitewashed houses, where the old defences and everyday life now share the same lane.
- Notice the surviving towers and wall sections, and the way the stonework changes in places, a sign that the defences were repaired and altered over many centuries.
- Walk around the area of Plaza Castillo to see how the line of the wall shaped the layout of the surrounding streets.
- Compare the stone of the fortifications with the nearby church and the town's squares, and you can read how the old town grew outwards from its defended core.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the walls themselves, longer if you combine them with a wander through the old town.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light on the stone is softer and the narrow streets are cooler and quieter.
- The Plaza de los Naranjos, the old town's main square, is a short walk away, so it is easy to pair with a coffee stop.
- Much of the wall can be seen from the street. If you want to enter any section, check current opening hours and access before you go.
