Informazioni su Guillaume Gate
The Guillaume Gate (Porte Guillaume) is a triumphal arch at the edge of Place Darcy in Dijon, in the Burgundy region of France. Built in the late 18th century in honour of the Prince of Condé, Governor of Burgundy, it now stands as the formal entrance to the old town and a natural starting point for a walk through the centre.
The story behind it
The gate was raised to honour the Prince of Condé, who governed Burgundy, and it was originally part of the city's ramparts. As Dijon grew and the walls disappeared in the 19th century, the gate was left standing on its own, a monument rather than a defence.
Its name recalls Guillaume de Volpiano, the reforming abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bénigne, one of the great religious figures in the history of Dijon. Today the arch is a landmark more than a passage, framing the view from Place Darcy into the pedestrian streets of the old town.
What to look for
- Look at the arch as a whole: its triumphal shape, with a large central opening, shows that it was designed as a monument to a governor and not as a simple city door.
- Step under the arch and examine the stonework inside, where traces of sealing are said to mark the place where the gate's iron grille once hung.
- Notice how the gate stands alone in the open space of Place Darcy, a reminder that it once belonged to a line of ramparts that no longer exists.
- Look through the opening toward the old town, where Rue de la Liberté leads on into the historic centre.
Tips for your visit
- You see the gate from the outside, in the open air, so it costs nothing to look at it. Allow ten to fifteen minutes to walk around it and take photos.
- Late afternoon and early evening are pleasant, when the stone catches the light and the square is lively.
- Place Darcy and the Jardin Darcy are right beside it, which makes a good place to pause with a coffee before heading into the centre.
- The pedestrian streets of the old town begin here, so combine the gate with a longer stroll rather than treating it as a stop on its own.
See it on a quest
The gate works well as one stop on Historical Dijon: A Delivery Through Time, a self-guided walk with a historical theme. You reach the arch on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. There is no guide to book and no group to join, and you can start whenever suits you. The quest is paid, and one ticket covers the whole group.
