Informazioni su The Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation

The Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation is the main archaeology museum in Deva, a town in western Romania's Hunedoara County. It sits in the Magna Curia, a Renaissance palace from the early 17th century, and tells the story of the Dacians and the Romans who shaped this part of Transylvania.

The story behind it

The building is the Magna Curia, raised in the early 1600s for Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania. It is one of the most important Renaissance residences in the region and stands on Strada 1 Decembrie, below the hill that carries the Deva Citadel.

The collections follow the deep past of the county. Before the Roman conquest in the early second century AD, the Dacians had their kingdom here, with its core in the Orăștie Mountains. After the conquest, the Romans made the province of Dacia, and Hunedoara County held Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the provincial capital. The museum grew out of local interest in these finds in the late nineteenth century, and it remains a key place to see material from the area.

What to look for

  • The palace itself: take a moment outside to read the Renaissance lines of the Magna Curia before you go in, since the building is part of the exhibit.
  • Dacian objects such as pottery and tools, which show everyday life in the kingdom that Rome defeated.
  • Roman stone monuments and inscriptions, which name the people, soldiers and gods of the province of Dacia.
  • The Deva Citadel on the hill above the town, which you can spot from the streets around the museum and which gives the visit its setting.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour for the collections, a little longer if you like reading the labels closely.
  • Check current opening hours and entry arrangements before you go, as they can change with the season.
  • The museum is in the centre of Deva, so it combines easily with a walk through the old town and a trip up toward the citadel.
  • Go earlier in the day if you want a quiet visit, and keep the late afternoon for the streets and the citadel hill.
