Informazioni su Dequindre Cut Greenway
The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a sunken former railway line in Detroit, Michigan, now used as a car-free path for walkers and cyclists. It links the Detroit Riverfront with Eastern Market and is known for the street art that covers its walls.
The story behind it
The Cut began as a railroad corridor, a trench cut below street level so that trains could pass through the east side of the city without crossing its roads. Its name comes from Dequindre Street, which runs along the same line. When the rail traffic faded, the trench sat neglected for years, filling with weeds and graffiti.
In the late 2000s the city and local partners turned it into a greenway. The first stretch opened in 2009, and a later extension carried it north to Eastern Market. Today it is one of the best-known pieces of Detroit's riverfront and trail network, and a good example of how the city has found new uses for old industrial ground.
What to look for
- The murals and graffiti on the high concrete walls change over time, so look for large pieces alongside smaller layered tags and stencils.
- The sunken setting itself is worth noticing: the path sits below the surrounding streets, and bridges cross overhead as you walk.
- The path is split into separate lanes for people on foot and on bikes, which makes it easy to walk at your own pace.
- At the southern end, look for the connection to the Riverwalk and the water, where the trench opens out toward the Detroit River.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes if you walk a good part of the greenway, longer if you stop to look at the art or continue to Eastern Market.
- Daylight is best, and morning or late afternoon gives softer light on the murals and cooler walking in summer.
- It is an outdoor public path, so there is nothing to go inside. Check current conditions and any access closures before you go.
- The Riverwalk is close at the south end and Eastern Market at the north end, so you can build a longer walk around the Cut.
See it on a quest
The Cut sits in the area covered by Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Riverwalk, Detroit. It is a good way to see the place because you reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the riverfront area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
