Informazioni su Chattahoochee RiverWalk

The Chattahoochee RiverWalk is a paved riverside path in Columbus, Georgia, running along the Chattahoochee River beside Uptown Columbus. It matters because the river is the reason the city exists: Columbus was founded here in 1828 at the head of navigation, and the same rapids that stopped the boats later powered its mills.

The story behind it

In 1828 the Georgia Legislature founded Columbus at the farthest point upriver that boats could reach. Beyond that point the river drops over the Fall Line, a band of rapids where the land falls toward the coastal plain. To early traders the rapids were a barrier. To the people who built the town they were a source of energy, and textile mills rose along the water, with dams holding the river back to drive them.

That industrial past has since been partly undone. The Eagle & Phenix and City Mills dams upstream were breached, and the river now runs freely through the city again. The result is a roughly 2.5-mile whitewater course for rafting and kayaking, billed as the longest urban whitewater run in the world. The RiverWalk follows this stretch, so you can walk beside the river that once defined the town and now draws people to play on it.

What to look for

  • Look at the water itself: the exposed rock and rapids show where the Fall Line meets the city, the spot that early boatmen could not pass.
  • Listen for the rapids on a quiet evening, since the sound of moving water carries clearly along the path.
  • Notice the old mill buildings near the river, which show how closely Columbus industry was tied to the current.
  • Look across the water to the far bank, which is Alabama, and notice how the river works as a natural border between the two states.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow an hour for a relaxed stroll along the nearest section, or longer if you want to watch rafters and kayakers on the rapids.
  • Early morning and early evening are the most comfortable times, especially in the warm months, and evening is best for listening to the river.
  • Uptown Columbus is close by, so restaurants, cafes and shops are an easy walk from the path.
  • The path is outdoors and open to walk along, but guided rafting and other river activities depend on operators and conditions, so check current availability before you plan around them.
