One of Europe's largest monasteries, the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolo l'Arena is among Sicily's greatest achievements in Late Baroque architecture. Founded in 1558 by reformed Benedictine monks, it was built on a monumental scale that reflected both spiritual devotion and earthly ambition.

Fate tested the monastery twice in quick succession. On March 8, 1669, Mount Etna erupted violently, and by the end of April, lava had engulfed the 16th-century building. Just 24 years later, the devastating 1693 earthquake killed 34 of the 48 monks in residence, nearly destroying the monastic community entirely.

But the Benedictines rebuilt, and the result is the extraordinary complex visible today. Two impressive cloisters, libraries, a basilica with soaring ceilings, a hanging garden, and 18th-century kitchens create a world within a world. The monastery even incorporates a Roman house discovered during construction, adding an ancient layer to the Baroque splendor.

Guided tours run daily in both Italian and English, taking approximately 75 minutes. The route covers both cloisters, the 16th-century cellar (now a library), the Roman house remains, the Novices' Garden, and the 18th-century kitchens where monastic meals were once prepared.

Today the monastery houses the University of Catania's Department of Humanities, blending religious heritage with modern academic life. Students study where monks once prayed, keeping the tradition of learning alive in these ancient halls.
