Informazioni su Theodor Pallady Museum
The Theodor Pallady Museum, also known as Casa Melik, is a small house museum at Strada Spătarului 22 in Bucharest, Romania. It is often described as one of the oldest houses still standing in the city, and it holds an art collection built around the Romanian painter Theodor Pallady.
The story behind it
Casa Melik has outlasted earthquakes, wars and many changes in the city around it, and its thick walls give the building a calm, closed-in feel. It was the home of Iacob Melik and his wife Ana, who loved art and books and gathered paintings, sculptures and sketches. After Ana's death the collection passed to the state, and the house became a museum.
The museum carries the name of Theodor Pallady, a Romanian painter whose works are among its main treasures. A well-known story, which may be legend, says he always wore gloves to protect his hands. When a general mocked him for shaking hands without taking them off, Pallady is said to have answered: "Some people work with their hands. Others just dirty them."
What to look for
- Notice the thick walls and the modest scale of the house, which show how different it is from the grander buildings that came later in Bucharest.
- Look at the paintings by Theodor Pallady, and see how a private collection is arranged in rooms meant for living rather than in a large gallery.
- Take in the sculptures and sketches gathered by the Melik family, which show the taste of the collectors as much as the artists.
- Find the garden, a quiet pocket of green that suits the story of artists painting in soft light.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on roughly 30 to 60 minutes inside, since this is an intimate house museum and not a large institution.
- Check current opening hours before you go, as small museums often keep limited schedules.
- Combine it with a walk through the surrounding streets of the Armenian Quarter, where you can pass several old buildings on foot.
- Go earlier in the day for a quieter visit, and leave time to linger over the details of the rooms.
See it on a quest
The house is one stop on La pas prin Cartierul Armenesc, a self-guided walk through the Armenian Quarter. You reach the museum on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
