Informazioni su Viktoriapark

Viktoriapark is a hilltop park in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, built around the 66 meter Kreuzberg, one of the highest natural hills in the city. It is known for Schinkel's Gothic national monument, an artificial waterfall and one of the best open views over central Berlin. The district itself takes its name from this hill.

The story behind it

The hill gave Kreuzberg its name because of the iron cross (Kreuz) that crowns the monument on its summit. The monument was inaugurated in 1821 to remember the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon. It is a slender Gothic column, around 20 meters tall and often compared to a church spire, and it was designed by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The park around it came later, in the nineteenth century, when the hill was turned into a landscaped green space. Its showpiece is a waterfall that drops about 24 meters down the slope. Because the Kreuzberg has no natural spring, the water has to be pumped up to the top so it can run down again. Today the large lawns draw local residents and other Berliners on sunny summer days.

What to look for

  • The Gothic cast-iron monument on the summit, with its pointed spire shape and the iron cross at the very top.
  • The waterfall tumbling down the hillside, where you can see how the artificial stream and its rocky channel were shaped to look like a mountain cascade.
  • The view over Berlin from the monument area, where you can pick out the city's rooftops and landmarks beyond Kreuzberg.
  • The steep paths and steps that climb the slope, which show just how much of a hill this is in a mostly flat city.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour to climb, look at the monument and waterfall and wander the paths, longer if you plan to picnic on the lawns.
  • Late afternoon and early evening in good weather are lovely for the view and the light, though the park is also busy then.
  • Wear shoes with a decent grip, as the paths up the hill are steep in places.
  • The park is an open public space, so you can walk in without a ticket. The surrounding Kreuzberg streets are close by for a coffee or a meal afterward.

See it on a quest

Viktoriapark is one of the places you reach on foot during Kreuzberg Highlights Berlin: The Secret Society, a self-guided quest through the district. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so the hill, monument and streets around it become part of one longer walk rather than a quick photo stop. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
