Informazioni su Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina
The Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina, often shortened to MUBAG, is the fine arts museum of Alicante, set in an eighteenth-century palace on Carrer Gravina in the old town. It is the place to see paintings and sculpture tied to Alicante and its artists, in a building that is worth a look in its own right.
The story behind it
The museum occupies the Palacio del Conde de Lumiares, a noble townhouse from the 1700s. The count it is named after, Antonio Valcárcel, was an Alicante nobleman and antiquarian. The palace was later converted to hold art, and it now serves as the city's main collection of fine arts.
The streets around it carry heavier memories. Alicante was one of the last Republican-held cities in Spain, and in March 1939 thousands of people crowded into its port hoping to escape by sea. The British ship Stanbrook, the last to leave, sailed with more than two thousand refugees. Those left on the quay were rounded up by Nationalist forces and held in makeshift camps, among them the Campo de los Almendros near the port. Many were later moved to other camps such as Albatera. Today the old quarter is calm, but this history is part of the city around the museum.
What to look for
- The palace facade on Carrer Gravina, whose measured proportions mark it out from the plainer buildings of the old town.
- The entrance and the way a noble residence has been adapted into a public museum.
- The paintings and sculptures inside, which show the artistic tradition of Alicante and its province.
- The narrow streets around the building, where the scale of the old town is easy to feel on foot.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour if you plan to go inside, and a few minutes if you only want to see the facade.
- Check current opening hours and entry conditions before you go, as they can change.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kinder for walking the old town, and the streets are cooler than at midday in summer.
- The museum sits in the historic centre, so it combines easily with a walk through nearby streets and down toward the port.
See it on a quest
The museum is one stop on Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Alicante, a self-guided walk through the city. You reach the building on foot as part of a longer route through the old town, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle right in front of what you are looking at. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
