À propos Fontaine Roesselmann

The Roesselmann Fontaine is a symbol of Colmar’s resilience and civic pride honoring Jean Roesselman who is considered to be the first hero of Colmar

The fountaine was created in 1888 by Auguste Bartholdi (sculptor of the Statue of Liberty) and features the bronze statue of Jean Roesselmann, a 13th-century public judge who died defending Colmar’s liberties against the Bishop of Strasbourg. The statue draws inspiration from Hercule de Peyerimhoff, a 19th-century mayor who resisted German rule. During WWII, the Germans removed the statue in 1943, but it was restored and reinstalled in 1945.

The square surrounding the fountain is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists, where they can relax, socialize, and enjoy the ambiance of the city. The fountain’s presence adds to the square’s charm and creates a picturesque setting.
