Colmar's Cour d'Assises
À propos Colmar's Cour d'Assises
Built in 1840 Colmar's Cour d'Assises is one of the city's rare neo-classical landmarks. It is mostly famous for its monumental staircase, facade and theatrical layout that reflect the grandeur of 19th-century judicial architecture. The site was constructed over the cellars of the Knights of Saint-John (dating to 1381), which was demolished for this purpose.
Notable features also include a sober vestibule with composite capitals and Tuscan pilasters, contrasting with the ornately decorated courtroom ceiling. The building is protected as a monument historique since 1992 and its staircase, facades, and interiors exemplify the era's architectural drama. Today, it remains an active court, blending history with function.
