Despre Courthouse

The Courthouse in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, is the historic building where local justice was handed down in the 18th century. It stands beside Market Square, on the main street of the restored colonial capital, and it is one of the best places in Williamsburg to understand how crime, punishment and faith fitted together in colonial life.

The story behind it

In colonial Virginia, crime was taken very seriously, and many punishments were meant to shame as well as hurt. Branding and maiming left lasting marks, and the worst crimes ended at the gallows. Religion shaped the system too. A convicted person could sometimes claim the "benefit of the clergy" and spare their life by reading a passage from the Bible, a practice remembered as the "neck verse". Justice here was harsh, yet the law also left room for mercy.

The streets around the courthouse also hold a famous episode from 1775. The Magazine, a short walk away on Market Square, stored the town's weapons and gunpowder. As Virginians began organizing militias, Governor Lord Dunmore had sailors quietly remove gunpowder from it on the night of April 20. The townsfolk found out and gathered in anger near the Governor's Palace. Patriots such as Peyton Randolph worked to calm the crowd, while Dunmore reportedly threatened to free the enslaved and burn the town. Patrick Henry then led militia toward Williamsburg, and the royal governor soon left the capital.

What to look for

  • The brick Georgian look of the building, which sits in a formal, orderly way on the edge of the green and reflects the dignity colonial Virginians gave to the law.
  • The stocks and pillory in the open area nearby, which show how public shaming was part of colonial punishment.
  • The nearby Magazine, an octagonal brick building across Market Square, which connects the courthouse to the gunpowder crisis of 1775.
  • The wide, open space of Market Square itself, where you can picture crowds gathering for court days and for news.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the courthouse and Market Square, longer if you want to see the Magazine and the shops close by.
  • Morning or late afternoon is calmer and gives softer light for photographs of the brick facades.
  • Access to interiors and any programs inside the historic area can change, so check current opening hours and visitor rules before you go.
  • The Magazine, the Governor's Palace and the Capitol are all within walking distance, so it is easy to combine them in one stroll.
