Despre Katarina Church
Katarina Church (Katarina kyrka) is a Baroque parish church on Södermalm in Stockholm, named after Princess Katarina of the Vasa family, mother of King Karl X Gustav. It has been destroyed by fire twice and rebuilt both times, and today it is one of the best-known silhouettes on the Södermalm hillside.
The story behind it
The church honours Princess Katarina, and the first church was completed in 1695, after a building period of close to four decades. It did not stay intact for long. In 1723 a fire that began at a mill west of the church spread on the wind, and the spire caught fire and collapsed. The blaze, remembered as the Katarina fire, destroyed hundreds of houses in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The church was rebuilt, but fire struck again in 1990. This time the cause was an electrical fault, and once more the spire fell. Funds were raised for reconstruction, and after about five years the church was restored to the form visitors see today. Its churchyard is also the resting place of a number of well-known figures, and the grounds add a quiet, green pause to the walk.
What to look for
- Look at the spire and the roofline, which had to be rebuilt after both fires and now dominate the skyline of this part of Södermalm.
- Notice the Baroque proportions of the main building, with its strong, symmetrical shape that sets it apart from the older streets around it.
- Walk around the churchyard and its gardens, and pause at the graves, where the names of notable Swedes can be found.
- Take in the surrounding streets, where the low houses show how the area took shape again after the fire of 1723.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the exterior and churchyard, and more if you go inside.
- Interior access depends on services and events, so check current opening hours before you plan a visit.
- The church also hosts concerts and community events, so a look at its programme can add something extra to your stop.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light shows off the building best, and the churchyard is calmest earlier in the day.
See it on a quest
Stockholm, City of My Dreams. Södermalm Quest is a good way to see the church because you reach it on foot as one stop on a longer route through Södermalm. The app tells you about the place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
Romantic Stockholm: The Lost Lover also passes the church, so you can see it as part of a themed walk rather than a lone detour. The app gives you the background at each stop and a puzzle to solve on the spot, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
