Despre Decumanus Street
Decumanus Street is the main street of the old town of Poreč, Croatia, and it follows the line of the east-west axis of the Roman colony of Parentium. Walking it today means moving through two thousand years of town life, past Gothic palaces, a medieval Romanesque house, small squares, cafés and shops.
The story behind it
In Roman times Parentium was laid out on a neat grid, and the decumanus was the principal street running through it, the counterpart of the cross street known as the cardo. The town later passed through Byzantine, medieval and Venetian hands, yet the old street plan survived. That is why the peninsula centre of Poreč still feels so orderly, with Decumanus running straight through it and shorter lanes branching off on either side.
The start of the street is marked by the Pentagonal Tower, a fortification from the 15th century, when Poreč was under Venetian rule. It guarded the landward entrance to the town, and a Venetian winged lion relief is the emblem you can look for on it. Each later century added its own layer along the street, which is why the facades change character every few steps.
What to look for
- The Pentagonal Tower at the entrance to the old town has an unusual five-sided shape and a Gothic look that recalls the Venetian era.
- The Romanesque House, one of the oldest surviving houses in Poreč, stands out among the later buildings with its simple medieval character.
- Gothic palace facades, with their pointed arches and carved window frames, show how wealthy families built along the main axis.
- The large stone paving underfoot gives the street its worn, polished look, especially after rain.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes for an unhurried stroll, longer if you stop for coffee or browse the shops.
- Go early in the morning or in the evening for fewer crowds and softer light on the stone.
- The street is a public thoroughfare you can walk at any time, though individual shops and cafés keep their own hours, so check current opening hours.
- The Euphrasian Basilica is a short walk from the street, so the two combine easily into one outing.
See it on a quest
The quest Poreč old town must see passes along Decumanus Street. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the old town, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the facades and the paving rather than just walking past them. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no fixed departure.
