Despre Peterborough Museum
Peterborough Museum is the city's local history museum, on Priestgate in the centre of Peterborough, England. It tells the story of the area through fossils from the clay beneath the city, objects made by Napoleonic prisoners of war and the everyday history of the people who lived here. It is a short walk from the cathedral, so it fits easily into a day in the city centre.
The story behind it
The museum grew out of the local wish to keep and show the history of Peterborough and the land around it. Its collections reflect two chapters the area is known for. The first is geological: the clay pits around Peterborough have produced fossils of Jurassic marine reptiles, a reminder that this flat landscape once lay under a warm sea.
The second belongs to the Napoleonic Wars. A large prisoner of war depot was built at Norman Cross, just south of the city, in the late 1790s. Prisoners there made small models and crafts from bone, wood and straw to sell, and examples of this work are among the objects the museum is associated with. Together these collections give a human scale to a city that most people know first for its cathedral.
What to look for
- Look for the Jurassic fossils from the Peterborough clay pits, and notice how large the marine reptiles were compared with the museum rooms around them.
- Find the Napoleonic prisoner of war crafts and study the fine detail that was cut and carved by hand with simple tools.
- Take a moment outside to look at the building itself and how it sits on Priestgate, among the older streets of the city centre.
- Watch for the displays that trace everyday local life over the centuries, which often say more about a place than its grand monuments do.
Tips for your visit
- Allow an hour or so for a relaxed look around, longer if you like reading every label.
- Check current opening hours and admission details before you go, as they can change with the season.
- Pair it with Peterborough Cathedral, which is a short walk away, and the nearby streets and Cathedral Square.
- A museum visit works well on a wet day, so keep it in reserve if the weather turns.
