Despre Palazzo della Camera di Commercio
The Palazzo della Camera di Commercio is the Chamber of Commerce building of Naples, set between Via Sant'Aspreno and Piazza Bovio in the lower city near the port. It is a large civic palace from the late 19th century, built when this part of Naples was being reshaped, and it still stands as a reminder of the city's trading life.
The story behind it
The palace dates from the years after the cholera epidemic of 1884, when Naples launched the Risanamento, a vast rebuilding of its crowded old quarters. New straight streets such as Corso Umberto I were cut through the lower city, and public buildings went up to give the area a modern, commercial face. The Chamber of Commerce and the city's stock exchange were housed in a grand palace designed by the architect Alfonso Guerra.
The building speaks of Naples as a port and a market town, where merchants, shipping and banking shaped daily life. Today the Chamber of Commerce is still tied to local business, so the palace remains a working institution rather than a museum. Its streets also sit close to the older, tougher stories of the city, which is why it appears on a quest about the dark side of Naples.
What to look for
- The imposing stone facade, which was designed to show the confidence and wealth of Naples' business world at the end of the 19th century.
- The position of the palace at the edge of Piazza Bovio, where the straight lines of the Risanamento meet the older street pattern.
- The contrast between the formal, monumental architecture and the busy everyday street life of the narrow lanes around Via Sant'Aspreno.
- The wide avenue of Corso Umberto I nearby, a good example of how the late 19th century rebuilding cut through the old city.
Tips for your visit
- Plan 10 to 15 minutes to look at the exterior and the square. It is best seen as one stop on a longer walk through the lower city.
- The palace is an active office building, so do not expect to wander inside. Check current opening hours and access if you have business there.
- Morning light and quieter streets make it easier to photograph the facade, and the area is busiest during the working day.
- Castel Nuovo, Piazza Municipio, Galleria Umberto I and the Teatro San Carlo are all within a short walk, so you can combine them easily.
