Despre Royal Exhibition Building

The Royal Exhibition Building is a large 19th century exhibition hall in Carlton Gardens, Carlton, Melbourne, topped by a landmark dome. Built for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, it is the only surviving major exhibition hall of its era still used for its original purpose, and in 2004 it became the first building in Australia to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The story behind it

Melbourne was growing fast on the wealth of the gold rush when the city decided to show itself to the world with an international exhibition. The architect Joseph Reed designed the hall, which opened in 1880 and drew on several European traditions, with a great dome that recalls the Renaissance churches of Italy. A second major exhibition followed in 1888, and the building became a centrepiece of the city's confidence in that period.

Its place in national history came in 1901, when the first Parliament of Australia was opened here after Federation. The Victorian Parliament also met in the building for a time while the federal government sat in Melbourne. Today it still hosts exhibitions, fairs and events, and it stands within the leafy Carlton Gardens.

What to look for

  • The dome and its lantern, which rise above the roofline and can be seen from many points around the gardens.
  • The decorated front facade, where arches, patterned brickwork and ornate detail blend several architectural styles into one design.
  • The wide approach through Carlton Gardens, with mature trees and paths that frame the building from different angles.
  • The contrast with the modern Melbourne Museum beside it, which shows how much the neighbourhood has changed since the 1880s.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk around the outside and the gardens, longer if you add the museum next door.
  • The gardens are open to walk through, but entry to the interior depends on events and tours, so check current opening hours and what is on.
  • Soft morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facade and the dome.
  • Carlton's cafes and Lygon Street are a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll.
