Despre Cashmore On Collins
Cashmore On Collins is a stop at 302 Collins Street in the centre of Melbourne, a few steps from the entrance to the Block Arcade, one of the city's finest Victorian shopping arcades. The address sits on the stretch of Collins Street that Melburnians have been strolling for generations, which is why it makes a good place to start exploring on foot.
The story behind it
The best-documented story here belongs to the Block Arcade next door. In the 19th century, well-dressed Melburnians paraded along this part of Collins Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets to see and be seen. The habit was called "doing the Block", and the arcade took its name from it.
The arcade was built in the early 1890s to a design by the architects Twentyman & Askew and opened in 1893. It is often said to have been inspired by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, which has a similar domed crossing on a much larger scale. Inside, the Hopetoun Tea Rooms have served customers since 1894.
What to look for
- Look at the mosaic tiles that cover the floor of the Block Arcade, laid out in patterns you can follow with your eyes as you walk.
- Find the domed crossing inside the arcade and compare it, in your mind, with the much bigger Milan galleria that is said to have inspired it.
- Notice the glass roof overhead, which lets daylight fall across the shopfronts below.
- Stand on the pavement of Collins Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets and picture the Victorian crowds who once walked this same block in their best clothes.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes if you want to look around the arcade and the street outside without rushing.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the arcade is quieter and the light through the roof is softer.
- Check current opening hours for the shops and the Hopetoun Tea Rooms before you plan a stop inside.
- The corner of Collins, Elizabeth and Swanston Streets is close by, so it is easy to combine this stop with a wider walk through the city centre.
