Despre Melbourne Civic Theatre

The Melbourne Civic Theatre is a community performing arts venue at 817 E Strawbridge Avenue in downtown Melbourne, Florida. It sits in the heart of the city's historic centre, on a street that tells the story of how a frontier settlement on Crane Creek became Melbourne and ended up with the name of a city in Australia.

The story behind it

The theatre is a modern arrival, but the ground around it has a long story. The settlement here was first known as Crane Creek. Among its earliest pioneers were Black settlers, including Peter Wright and Balaam Allen, who built lives on a frontier where only a few years before they could not have owned land. Others followed, and the village was incorporated on December 22, 1888.

The name came with the post office. Its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, was an Englishman who had lived in Melbourne, in the Australian colony of Victoria, and the town was named in honour of that connection. Later, in 1919, a fire destroyed much of the early commercial district on Front Street, and the town centre developed further inland, around streets like Strawbridge Avenue.

What to look for

  • The theatre itself, a working community venue, so look for posters and signs showing which production is currently on.
  • The street sign for Strawbridge Avenue, a good spot to pause and picture the small settlement that grew into the downtown you see now.
  • The mix of shops and restaurants along the street, which reflects a town centre rebuilt and reshaped well after the pioneer days.
  • The way the street feels after dark, when the lights come on and the downtown takes on a quieter, more atmospheric mood.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 15 to 20 minutes for the theatre and the street outside, longer if you want to eat nearby or explore the rest of downtown.
  • You normally go inside for a performance, so check the current schedule and opening hours before you plan on seeing the interior.
  • Late afternoon and evening are pleasant for a walk, when the heat eases and the street lights come on.
  • The surrounding blocks have restaurants and shops, so it works well as a stop on a longer stroll through downtown.
