Las Vegas

Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, which opened as the Golden Hotel in 1906, claims the title of oldest continuously operating hotel on what would become the Las Vegas Strip (though technically it's on Fremont Street downtown). The original building predates organized Las Vegas gambling, operating as a simple roadside hotel when Las Vegas was barely a town. Golden Gate went through many transformations: the current art deco facade dates from 1955, and the casino operated under various names and management before the current Golden Gate branding. With Questo, you can experience where old Vegas transformation happened, see 1950s-inspired decor mixed with modern updates, and walk through a place that survived every era of Vegas history. The hotel epitomizes survival through adaptation, maintaining its historic bones while updating for contemporary travelers. A visitor here touches actual Vegas history extending back to the early 1900s, though most tourists pass it by for newer Strip resorts. Golden Gate represents Las Vegas's Victorian-era past colliding with mid-century cool.

The Mob Museum, officially the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, opened in Las Vegas in 2012 at the former Federal Courthouse and Post Office, a historic building where famous mafia trials took place. The museum doesn't celebrate organized crime but rather examines it unflinchingly through a law enforcement perspective, displaying artifacts from famous criminal investigations, police equipment, and historical documents that reveal how mobs corrupted cities and how dedicated agents fought back. The museum's exhibits feature everything from Al Capone's prison mug shot to the car Jimmy Hoffa rode in the day he disappeared to surveillance photos from FBI stakeouts. With Questo, you can navigate the twisted story of organized crime in America, understand how casinos funded its growth, and explore the cat-and-mouse game between criminals and lawmen. The museum presents an unflinching look at violence, corruption, and the human toll of organized crime. It's compelling history that shows why Las Vegas had to shed its mob connections to survive as a modern city.

El Cortez opened in 1941 as Las Vegas's first casino, predating the Flamingo by four years and standing as the city's oldest continuously operating casino. The name means "The Cortez" in Spanish, referencing Hernando Cortez, though its significance to Las Vegas is purely American. Built before the Strip existed, El Cortez operated on Fremont Street when downtown Las Vegas was the only game in town. The hotel witnessed Las Vegas's transformation from a dusty desert outpost to a world-famous gambling destination, surviving Mafia control, economic crashes, and the competition of glittering newer casinos by maintaining its historic charm and loyal customer base. The 15-story tower, added in 1956, originally had the fastest elevator on the West Coast. With Questo, you can explore the vintage carpet and decor of an original casino floor, stay in rooms largely unchanged since the 1950s, and sense the history embedded in every corner. El Cortez represents old Las Vegas before mega-resorts; it's where modern gambling history actually began.

The Fountains of Bellagio are a water ballet that transformed Las Vegas from a city of static casinos into a city of moving art. Opened in 1998, the fountains cost $70 million to build and draw over 40 million visitors annually, making them one of Earth's most-watched performances. An intricate system of 4,500 lights, 1,200 nozzles, and 22 million gallons of water choreographed to classical and contemporary music creates an experience that feels like water defying gravity. The fountains erupt from the Bellagio's man-made lake, shooting water up to 460 feet into the air in perfectly timed sequences. With Questo, you can watch free performances every 15-30 minutes from the Las Vegas Boulevard, experiencing how Las Vegas turned fountains into public art accessible to everyone. The fountains prove that Vegas isn't just about money but also about spectacular visual storytelling. The choreography changes seasonally and follows classical music from Sinatra to Luciano Pavarotti.

New York-New York Hotel and Casino, opened in 1997, contains a 34-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty as part of its elaborate recreation of New York City landmarks. Standing on the Las Vegas Strip, this copper-torch-bearing statue sits near replica Brooklyn Bridge and Chrysler Building, making New York-New York essentially a theme park recreation of an American city for the purpose of gambling. The replica statue may lack the original's 151-foot majesty, but it captures Lady Liberty's iconic gesture and symbolism in intimate form. With Questo, you can explore how Las Vegas decodes world-famous landmarks for entertainment consumption, visiting replicas of the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, and Times Square all within a massive casino complex. The statue represents Vegas's approach to tourism: why travel to the real thing when we'll recreate it better? It's commentary on American consumption disguised as fun. The replica becomes a kitschy meditation on authenticity and desire.
