Despre Christchurch Mansion
Christchurch Mansion is a Tudor house standing in Christchurch Park in Ipswich, Suffolk. Built in the middle of the 16th century on the site of a dissolved priory, it later passed through several prominent families before being given to the town, and it is now one of Ipswich's best known historic buildings.
The story behind it
Before the mansion there was a religious house. From the 12th century the Augustinian Priory of the Holy Trinity stood on this ground. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, the priory's land was sold off, and the Withypoll family, who had made part of their fortune in trade, bought it. They pulled down the priory buildings and put up a new family home, built around 1548 and 1549.
Over the centuries the house changed hands several times. In the 17th century it passed to the Devereux family, and in the 18th century to the Fonnereau family. In the late 19th century Felix Cobbold, of the Ipswich brewing family, gave the house and its park to the people of the town, which is why you can walk up to it today.
What to look for
- The warm red brick and the tall Tudor chimneys give the house its silhouette, so take a moment to look at it from the park before going closer.
- The gabled roofline shows how the building has been altered over the centuries while keeping its Tudor character.
- Inside, the rooms are furnished in styles from different periods, so you can see how the house was lived in by its successive owners.
- The art collection includes paintings by Suffolk artists such as Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable, a fitting link to the landscape just outside the windows.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour for the house, and longer if you want to wander through Christchurch Park around it.
- The park is pleasant at any time of day, but morning or late afternoon light is kinder for photographs of the brick facade.
- The mansion is a museum you can go inside. Check current opening hours and entry details before you set out.
- The Wolsey Art Gallery sits close by in the park, and the town centre is a short walk away, so it combines easily with a wider stroll through Ipswich.
See it on a quest
A Walk Through Tudor Ipswich: Wool Merchant’s Journey Walking Tour & Escape Game is a good way to place the mansion in its Tudor setting. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
