Despre Kollegium Sankt Michael
Kollegium Sankt Michael, known in French as the Collège Saint-Michel, is a Jesuit-founded school in the heart of Fribourg, Switzerland. It dates from 1582 and is closely tied to the Jesuit Peter Canisius, who spent his last years in the city. It is still a working secondary school, which makes it a living piece of Fribourg's history.
The story behind it
The college was founded in 1582 by the Jesuits, with Peter Canisius playing a key part in bringing the order to Fribourg. Canisius was a leading figure of the Catholic Reformation in German-speaking lands. He died in Fribourg in 1597 and is buried in the Jesuit church of St Michael beside the college. The street that runs past, Rue Saint-Pierre Canisius, carries his name.
For centuries the college shaped education in the city. The Jesuits were expelled from Switzerland in the aftermath of the Sonderbund war in the 1840s, but the school carried on and still teaches pupils today. It sits in the Fribourg's bilingual setting, where French and German meet.
What to look for
- The church of St Michael next to the college, where Peter Canisius is buried, is the spiritual centre of the site.
- The street sign for Rue Saint-Pierre Canisius shows how thoroughly the Jesuit saint has been woven into the city's map.
- The long, solid school buildings show how a 16th-century foundation grew into the campus you see now.
- Pupils coming and going remind you that this is a living school and not a museum piece.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to look at the exterior and the church, longer if you want to read about Canisius.
- The college is an active school, so keep to public areas and be quiet near the buildings. Check current opening hours for the church before you go inside.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facades, and weekends are calmer than school days.
- The stop is within walking distance of the old town and the Cathedral of St Nicholas, so it combines easily with a wider stroll through Fribourg.
See it on a quest
Fribourg: Hunting the flying dragon is a good way to see this place. You reach the college on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, so you look closely instead of just walking past. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
