Despre Fort Worth Sleeping Panther
The Fort Worth Sleeping Panther is a statue in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, that celebrates the city's nickname, Panther City. The name comes from a put-down in the 1870s that Fort Worth turned into a source of pride, and the statue is the easiest way to see that story on the street.
The story behind it
In 1875 a Dallas newspaper writer mocked Fort Worth by saying the town was so quiet that a panther could sleep undisturbed in its main street. The jab had some truth in it. Fort Worth began in 1849 as a military outpost, and by the mid 1870s it was a small frontier town with a shrinking population and no railroad.
That changed in 1876, when the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived. Fort Worth became a major point for shipping cattle, and herds driven up the Chisholm Trail passed through the area. Saloons, stockyards and trade followed. Locals kept the panther as their emblem, and the sleeping animal came to stand for a town that was only resting. The statue turns an old insult into a joke Fort Worth tells on itself.
What to look for
- The panther is shown at rest, which is the whole point: it is the sleeping animal from the 1875 insult, now treated as a badge of honor.
- Look at how the statue sits among the downtown buildings around it, and think of the same ground as a dusty frontier street in the 1870s.
- Notice how often the panther appears elsewhere in downtown Fort Worth, as a sign that the nickname is still part of the city's identity.
- Take in the surrounding blocks, where the modern city centre has replaced the cattle-town streets that the railroad once filled.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes for the statue itself, longer if you want to wander the surrounding streets.
- It stands in the open on a city street, so you can see it from the pavement at any time of day. Daylight is best for photographs.
- Pair it with a stroll through nearby downtown, where there are plenty of places to eat and drink afterwards.
- Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to continue on foot, and check current conditions in summer, when Texas afternoons get hot.
